The Typhoon - Takes and Gives

Starting to write about the typhoon and what it brought us, I have a bittersweet taste in my mouth at first. However, when Typhoon Yagi hit Vietnam, it brought with it a story of two worlds — while the north of the country was struck by severe storms and destruction, the south received incredible waves, perfect for surfing. Our team decided to embrace everything nature had to offer, with a deep sense of respect and gratitude. We knew we had to find a balance between the destructive and the beautiful, learning from nature to accept both the challenges and the gifts it provides. In every wave’s crash, we felt the power but also the wisdom of nature — a reminder that living in harmony with it is the best way to truly understand its rhythm.

Our team set out on a journey to find the perfect waves. The forecast, a few days earlier, had predicted Northeast swell and wind direction from the Southwest, which resulted in golden conditions. We packed our bikes, grabbed our boards, and set off to our second homespot Vinh Hy. A four-hour drive, with a few stops for coffee and a rest in a hammock, along what we consider the most beautiful route to Vinh Hy, is truly worth it. Although the route is longer and avoids the highway, we prefer it because we know every turn and curve by heart. We choose this route because we believe it offers the most beautiful coastal scenery in central Vietnam. Looking at that coastline, where the Mediterranean meets the tropics, with coral reefs all around, it feels like the entire world comes together. The feeling of simplicity and carefree driving along this coast is something we gladly return to.

The waves of Phan Rang shape us as surfers and always bring us closer to nature. The satisfaction and emotions these waves gave us will stay in our memories. This place has some of the best waves in Vietnam, drawing surfers from all around. It’s not just about the challenge but also about feeling a sense of community. Every wave leaves you with a sense of joy and a desire to come back.

We were greeted by perfect conditions. The forecast was spot on, and the typhoon had given us the best it could. Local surfers from Cam Ranh, Nha Trang, and Mui Ne also joined us, and we shared the waves together. With humility and gratitude, this journey taught us to find peace and beauty in every storm that comes our way.
