From Fisherman to Surfer: Let’s Hook on the Feeling

Updated: Aug 8

We welcome you all to our new website, where we aim to spread inspiration for surfing and share knowledge. We will update you on news related to our school and surfing in general.

As a special treat for our 10th anniversary, we bring you a brief history of our surf school. A lot has changed in the past decade, but the idea and goal of our school remain the same: to build a community of like-minded individuals who live and breathe surfing every day.

At the age of 19, Tuan replaced his family’s fishing tradition with a job at a kite school as a beach boy. He fell more in love with water sports and discovered surfing as the activity where he felt most at one with the water.

The main person who introduced him to surfing was the mini-legend of Mui Ne, local surfer Mr. Phi, who still rides the waves with his distinctive style.

The love for a free-spirited lifestyle, independence, and working for himself led Tuan to the idea of opening his own surf school—a meeting place for all surfers and locals.

Alongside Phi, another legend of Mui Ne is Winston, also one of the first locals to shred the big waves in Phan Rang. He collaborated with Tuan and shared the first surf lessons.

Together, they built a small community of local surfers. Today, we can proudly say that all the local surfers of Mui Ne have passed through our small community, where we unconditionally share our knowledge and experience, inspiring them to be better surfers so that they too can live a beautiful, free life.

We are delighted to see Mui Ne developing into a surfing destination, and now, after 10 years, we see an increase in the number of local surfers, female surfers, and surf schools.

In the 10 years since the school was founded, over 10,000 students have passed through, and we believe they still remember Vietnam as their first wave. Today, they surf at some of the most famous surfing destinations. We started modestly, which is why Tuan named the school Muine Local, with the emphasis on LOCAL, to attract as many local surfers as possible to build a surf community together. He bought 3-4 boards and started giving the first lessons (Those boards are still with us today as souvenirs of our beginning.). Boys from the village had the opportunity to learn for free and to join the team of instructors after they had mastered the techniques of surfing, giving them the chance to earn money and live solely from surfing.

If you ask Tuan, he never imagined it would turn out this way. He lives in the moment, loves his job and surfing, and believes he will continue living this life as long as he is physically able.

Over the years, many boards have been broken, replaced, or repaired, but we still strive to have a range of good quality boards, from local shapers to imported ones, to ensure the best quality for all levels of surf lessons. Now, 10 years later, we have over 40 quality boards, and we believe this number will continue to grow as more people support and follow us on our journey.

Our goal is for our community, Muine Local, to be open to everyone, especially locals, to find their path like Tuan—from fisherman to surfer. Our home/office is always open to all surfers and like-minded individuals. It is a small, cherished place where you can come to get inspired by surfing, surf skate on our wave bank, or simply come for a dose of laughter and cuddling with our dogs.

As a community, we aim to offer new programs, more workshops, surf camps, surf trips, and mini-events in Vietnam and the surrounding region. We are very excited about the upcoming winter season.

To conclude, a message from Tuan: "Let our coaches guide you through this amazing sport, share their knowledge with you, and teach you the basics so that you can become an independent surfer in a safe and fun way."
